Cleaning your furniture doesn’t have to be an intimidating process. All it takes is a little special care and a few of our tips, and you’ll have clean sofas and chairs in no time. Aside from vacuuming your sofa regularly to remove dirt and dust, check out the following tips for how to read and use fabric furniture cleaning codes.
Check your furniture’s care label to find out which of the following treatments is appropriate for cleaning stains.
“S” SOLVENT
Use a light blanket or Spot clean using a dry-cleaning product or a pure, water-free cleaning solvent.
“X” VACUUM OR BRUSH LIGHTLY ONLY
Do not use water-based or solvent-based cleaners, as they may cause the fabric to shrink. Instead, use a soft cloth to blot up as much of the stain as possible, dab a tiny amount of the appropriate cleaner onto the stain with your finger and rub gently. Finally, use a soft cloth to blot the area again, from the outside of the stain in, using a circular motion.
“W” WATER
Spot clean using a water-based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner. When cleaning a spill, blot immediately to remove the spill. Pile fabrics may need brushing with a nonmetallic, stiff bristle brush to restore appearance.
“WS”
Spot clean with upholstery shampoo, mild detergent, or a mild dry-cleaning solvent. Test a small area of fabric before cleaning and avoid saturating the fabric completely.
